Donation Will Expand Dental Service Offerings to Local Residents in Need
Indianapolis, IN., April 2019
Hunter & Spence, a full-service career consulting and recruitment firm exclusively for dentists, recently donated $5,000 to SEAL Indiana (SEAL IN), a not-for-profit mobile dental sealant program, operated by Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD). The donation will allow low-income children to receive dental sealants, oral examinations, prophylaxis, oral health education, and fluoride varnish applications. These preventive services are necessary to maintain oral health in the community and allow these children access to dental services otherwise not provided to them.
“SEAL IN remains committed to helping parents and guardians identify dentists in their community who are willing to help treat these children. SEAL IN works with school nurses to make sure parents are aware of their child’s need for restorative work and emergency dental care. Currently, SEAL IN continues to work on strategies to ensure that children treated by the program have continuity of care and a dental home,” said Dr. Armando E Soto-Rojas.
Since SEAL IN’s inception in March 2003, the program has:
- Provided 26,377 fluoride varnish treatments;
- Placed 48,633 sealants on permanent teeth of 6 to 18-year-old children;
- Provided sealants to 13,527 children; and,
- Notified parents and guardians of children serviced by SEAL IN of their child’s dental health whether there was a need for follow-up care by a dentist. 35% of children serviced by SEAL IN had untreated caries and of these children, 10% were experiencing pain and/or infection that had urgent needs.
One of SEAL IN’s goals is to train dental students in community-based interventions. “These students are the future of Indiana’s dental workforce who will no doubt have an impact on dental health in their own community,” said Dr. Soto-Rojas.
“Hunter & Spence is proud to support the Indiana University School of Dentistry and their SEAL Indiana program. This program not only provides needed dental care and education to low-income
